Click image to enlarge Sonoma soccer fans should be proud of the tremendous display of athletic courage and determination demonstrated by the U11G Heat over the weekend in the Tiburon Fall Kickoff Classic. The Sonoma defense dominated in the preliminaries, shutting out Montclair 3-0, drawing Rohnert Park 0-0, and defeating Walnut Creek 2-1 to win their bracket and advance to the finals against Danville’s Mustang Stampede.

Click images to enlarge Sonoma’s U11G Heat got the opportunity of a lifetime this past weekend when the team’s path crossed with that of MSL soccer stars David Beckham and Landon Donovan. The Heat squad was in San Jose for the Magic Cup III Tournament, while the Galaxy was in town to face the San Jose Earthquakes. Unfortunately for the girls, they were eliminated 2-2, 1-5, 0-2 in an extremely tough bracket. Although the match results were disappointing, they will soon be forgotten. Meanwhile, the chance encounter with two of the world’s greatest soccer players will be something the girls will remember for the rest of their lives! |

Click image to enlarge SVYSA’s U11 Girls D3 team, Sonoma Heat, started the season on a positive note, finishing 2nd out of 8 teams in the Puma Seawolf 6 v 6 at Sonoma State on July 20. The girls held the second spot in Group B after winning two of three preliminary matches, falling only to an extremely physical PIBAS team, 4-3, on a late goal. In their semi-final match, the Heat soundly defeated the Group A winner, Petaluma, taking an early 5-0 lead and cruising to a 5-2 victory, setting up a re-match with PIBAS in the finals. There, the girls jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but PIBAS responded with a score of their own and a tense, see-saw battle ensued, with PIBAS eventually prevailing, 6-4. The battle-tested Heat girls now look forward to their next challenge, the Magic Cup Tournament in San Jose, August 2 & 3. |
