After a three month hiatus playing as a team due to the high school season, the U19 girls Team Excel came back with a strong showing in the CVU Thanksgiving Classic at Cherry Island in Sacramento.  After 60 minutes and two 5-minute overtimes could not decide a winner it all came down to penalty kicks in the championship match.  This makes it the 4th straight tournament in which Excel has reached the finals, and of 5 out of 6 for 2009!

Excel started quickly with a dominating 4-0 performance Saturday morning vs Elk Grove Fury.  Excel's stellar defense was rarely threatened by Elk Grove while the attack seemed to be clicking on all cylinders despite the long layoff.  Sierra Nadeau started the scoring on an all-out unassisted run from the left midfield.  After the half sister Lexie got into the action also on an unassisted run to beat the defense. Nicki Differding took a Michelle Honey serve and finished it off for the third score, and Karina Davis completed the scoring with an assist form Emma Forsythe.

Sonoma SC Team Excel U19 Girls finished off a great summer by winning the Soccer by the Bay crown in Palo Alto on the weekend of August 22nd and 23rd . The win capped a very successful summer tournament season where Excel reached the championship match for the fourth time in five tournaments while winning the final twice.
The Sonoma squad started out Saturday with a convincing 4-0 win against the San Mateo Thunderbirds boosted by two of captain Sierra Nadeau scores. Jenna Wirick and captain Ellen Everidge also scored for Sonoma with assists from Lexie Nadeau and Wirick in the match.
Next up Excel handled San Carlos Spirit 4-0 starting with a long strike from defender Alli Cobb, followed up by scores from Sierra Nadeau (unassisted), Jenna Wirick (off a Sierra Nadeau serve), and an Emma Forsythe header (off a Wirick cross).
The final preliminary match saw Excel beat Delta Thunder 3-0 on the strength of a Lexi Nadeau strike (via a Natalie Pratt cross), a captain Emma Forsythe volley from a perfectly placed Karina Davis corner kick), and a Nicki Differding goal (served up by Forsythe).

The U19 Team Excel girls had an epic battle with the host Folsom Riot team in the championship match before falling 2-0 Sunday night. Folsom just won the Northern California Association Cup in March and were said to have significantly improved their team with new talent this year. Excel had a 9 hour interval between the start of thier first game Sunday to the fiinal match at 5:30pm.  Sonoma Excel continued their excellent tournament play, reaching the championship match for the second tournament in a row, and the third time this summer in four tournaments.

To get to the final Excel beat an excellent Elk Grove Spirit team in bracket play 1-0 Saturday morning – a team who Excel had not managed to beat the in the last three seasons but broke through with one of their best efforts of the year. Excel central midfielders Emma Forsythe and Ellen Everidge completely controlled the play and the defense shut down the high scoring Spirit attack. Sierra Nadeau came through with the only score of the match when she beat her defender from the right wing midfield and then beat the keeper for the winner.

Excel beat Petaluma Heat 4-0 in the afternoon on two goals from Lexie Nadeau, another from sister Sierra, and the final from attacking mid Emma Forsythe.

Sunday morning Excel took care of Fruitridge Fury 3-1 on Sunday morning on two more scores from Lexie Nadeau and one from Jenna Wirick. Excel will finish the summer tournament schedule in the Soccer By The Bay tournament August 22nd & 23rd.

In their first US Club tournament experience the U19 girls demonstrated excellent soccer skills, amazing stamina and fortitude, and superb sportsmanship to come away with 2nd place in the “Come Up For Air” tournament in South Lake Tahoe.
