“Choose to Matter” was the theme at the Julie Foudy SportsLeadership Academy that three Sonoma S.C. RUSH girls, Sophie Miyasaki, Christen Silkey, and Danielle Maillard attended this summer. The week-long, live-in camp was held in Moraga, CA at St. Mary’s College. The girls spent 4 ½ hours each day playing soccer and 4 ½ hours a day in Leadership classes and activities.

"Julie Foudy is an amazing and inspiring person.  People always say that she is one of the greatest people that they have ever met and I want to be that way too", Danielle stated as she described one of the aspects of the Academy that she liked best.  Julie Foudy is an impressive leader.  She is a 2-time Olympic Gold Medalist, 2-time World Cup Champion, Former Captain and 18-year veteran of the US Women's National Team, 3-year Captain of the WUSA's San Diego Spirit Professional Women's Soccer Team and Elected into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2007.  She stared the JFSLA in 2006 with the aim to expose students to her great passion: the concept of not just being a leader on the field but a LEADER IN LIFE.  Danielle was amazed that Julie Foudy fully particpated in the camp all week, "She makes you want to do more and be willing to speak up instead of waiting for someone else to do it for you ".

In near blizzard conditions and under the lights of the beautiful Redding Soccer Complex, the U12G Sonoma Rush defeated the Stockton Storm 97 for the second time in a Championship this year.

As soon the game started, snow began to fall, eventually blanketing the field. This did not affect the Rush ability to play their best. To the contrary, Rush started the game at full speed and scored a goal after only two minutes. Rush played very well with a strong collective defense and fast counter attacks. The second period started the same way as the first with a goal scored on a fast breakaway in the first two minutes. At some point in the middle of the second period, the game was stopped due to unsafe field conditions with collecting snow, before being resumed 15 minutes later. Final score: 2-0

During this weekend tournament, on the way to their eighth consecutive championship of the season, Sonoma Rush defeated the Santa Rosa Laguna Pibas 4-1, the Woodland Sparks 3-0 and the Redding Missfits Adrenaline 3-0.

Next stop for Rush - Fremont, on January 10th & 11th for the preliminary round of the 2009 Association Cup.

The Sonoma Rush is undefeated in league play for the second year in a row and take first place in District 5.

Last weekend the Rush were traveling to Morgan Hill for the South San Jose Thanksgiving Classic and defeated the Mustang Mavericks 5-0, South Valley United (Visalia) 2-1, Hayward United 5-0 and Dublin Orange Crush 2-0 to take their 5th tournaments crown of the year.

While the Rush excel at playing soccer, they need to improve their cooking skills! On Saturday night, they managed to put their popcorn on fire causing a full evacuation of the hotel.

Next, the Rush will be traveling to Redding in preparation for the Association Cup in January.
