The girls defeated Tiburon 2-1 in the Saturday morning opener, allowing what would prove to be their only goal against of the tourney on a crazy bounce off a long strike from midfield. The team then survived a miserably hot afternoon match, outlasting Walnut Creek 1-0.
On Sunday morning, the Heat finished off their sweep of the preliminaries by soundly defeating Montclair 3-0. In contrast to the previous day, the weather on the shores of San Francisco Bay was perfect for the Sunday afternoon championship game, where the girls faced a tough and determined Mill Valley squad. Pressing the attack midway through the first half, the Heat scored what turned out to be the only goal of the match on a tap in by Jenna Biersch. The strong Heat defense and midfield then took over the game, smothering every Mill Valley attack, to seal the 1-0 win and the first place trophy.
Next up for the Heat is the Wine Country Classic this weekend in Napa. |

  Click images to enlarge Sonoma’s U11G Heat got the opportunity of a lifetime this past weekend when the team’s path crossed with that of MSL soccer stars David Beckham and Landon Donovan. The Heat squad was in San Jose for the Magic Cup III Tournament, while the Galaxy was in town to face the San Jose Earthquakes. Unfortunately for the girls, they were eliminated 2-2, 1-5, 0-2 in an extremely tough bracket. Although the match results were disappointing, they will soon be forgotten. Meanwhile, the chance encounter with two of the world’s greatest soccer players will be something the girls will remember for the rest of their lives! |
