The Santos, Sonoma's Under-15 Boys Division 1 soccer team, fought their way to a second place finish in the California Rush Open over Labor Day weekend in Sacramento.
The Santos defeated Cal Odyssey Red 1 - 0 on Saturday morning and followed that up with a 2 - 1 victory over Tracy Chaos in the afternoon. In Sunday morning's semifinal match they faced the Mount Hamilton Tigres, a team that made it to the final four of the CYSA State Cup in April. The score was 1 - 1 after regulation time, so the game went to penalty kicks. The Santos converted four of theirs to the Tigres' three and emerged victorious.
In the championship match on Sunday afternoon, the Santos held off a very strong and physical Alliance Corsarios team through regulation time and a ten-minute Golden Goal overtime. Corsarios, however, was able to score the only goal of the match several minutes into the second overtime for a 1 - 0 victory.
The Sonoma Santos are coached by Danny Jimenez and Salvador Chavez. |
