Ben & Jerry'sBen & Jerry’s local owners Troy & Dawn Marmaduke present a donation to Sam Honey, SVYSA President
Ben & Jerry’s Sonoma devoted time, money, and lots of great energy to the first big fundraising event of the 2009 soccer season on April 21st at the Sonoma Plaza.  The SVYSA Scholarship Fund was one of two beneficiaries of Free Cone Day, along with Stand by Me Mentoring Alliance.  3,500 scoops of ice cream were donated by Ben & Jerry’s, netting $1,070.25 for Sonoma Soccer Scholarships.   This money directly benefits young soccer players who otherwise might not be able to play soccer in Sonoma.
Anytime you stop in to Ben & Jerry’s scoop shop on the Sonoma Plaza, you are likely to see a photo slideshow of various soccer teams, and our Free Cone Day photos, while you choose your favorite treat!

All our gratitude to the Marmaduke family and Ben & Jerry’s, who are very committed supporters of SVYSA and our local children!

If you’d like to contribute to our Soccer Scholarship Fund, please e-mail fundraising@sonomasoccer.org.

Sam Honey, President of the Sonoma Valley Youth Soccer Association, revs up for the 2009 regular season by gratefully receiving a $500 donation check from Mike Jones, Manager of Sonoma’s Friedman Brothers.  This money goes into the 2009 SVYSA Scholarship Fund, enabling SVYSA to award partial scholarships to young players who qualify.

SVYSA administers soccer for Sonoma’s children, ranging in age from 4 – 18. 1,200 children play soccer each year within the Soccer league.

The Scholarship Fund depends on the kindness and community spirit of donors who contribute to this fund.
Other community members pitching in to the 2009 SVYSA Scholarship Fund are The Red Grape and Whole Foods Market, Sonoma.

From now through mid April, Sonoma Soccer is a beneficiary of the Whole Foods “Nickels for Non-Profits” program.  Whole Foods donates a nickel for every customer who provides their own shopping back at check out.  Please pass the word as you shop Whole Foods and The Red Grape!

Sam Honey presents a check to Todd Kneeland and his son Kristopher

Sam Honey, SVYSA President, presents a check to Todd Kneeland and his son Kristopher.  Todd and Kristopher developed and implemented a new recycling program for all Sonoma Soccer games and Tournaments for the 2008 regular season.  In doing so, they raised money which they shared with the Soccer club.  The club then donated it’s share back to Todd and Kristopher to help pay their start-up expenses.  How much was collected?  So far, here is the tally:  Aluminum, 52 lbs; Glass, 127 lbs; Plastic, 504 lbs.
An interesting note:  Todd and Kristopher had to remove screw top caps from all bottles, separate them, and empty large quantities of liquid before taking them to the local Safeway recycle center.  This represents a very labor intensive commitment on their part, not to mention the wasted liquid dumped.

Todd and Kristopher hope to spread their message of recycling throughout the Sonoma community, with a special focus on teaching children about the value of this practice by using a fun method called “recycle your weight”.  For more information, please contact info@sonomasoccer.org.
